April 12-13, 1861" The image area measures 23.3 x 18.7 cm [9¼" x 7¼"]. Named places and features on the map include Fort Sumter, Mount Pleasant, Moultrieville, Haddrell's Beacon, Sullivan's Island, Fort Johnson, Cummings Point, Rebellion Road, Shell Creek, and Fort Moultrie. The map also locates the lighthouse at Fort Sumter, and a table of notes gives details on the batteries' locations, guns, and mortars. This map was published in Supplemental Report of the Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War, by Major General John Gray Foster to the 2nd Session of the 38th Congress. It was lithographed by Bowen & Company, Philadelphia, and issued in Washington by the Government Printing Office, 1866. Condition: It is in very good condition, bright and clean, with folds, as issued, a faint wrinkle at the upper left, and no marks, rips, or tears. Prior to the Civil War, Foster had served as an engineer during the Mexican–American War. In 1858 he was on engineering duty in Charleston Harbor, where he helped in the construction of Fort Sumter. He was in command of the garrison at Fort Moultrie when the Civil War began. He immediately transferred his small force to Fort Sumter and became second-in-command to Maj.
