Description: Mohawk Airlines became the first of the regional (local service) carriers to inaugurate pure jet service when it began BAC 1-11 service at Syracuse, Buffalo, Rochester, White Plains, Elmira, Cleveland, Utica, New York, and Newark on July 15, 1965 This cover was carried on the inaugural Air Mail Route 94 flight from Newark, New Jersey to Buffalo, New York (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Jet Age Flights Section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as J-1052. On April 12, 1972, the Civil Aeronautics Board approved the merger of Mohawk Airlines with Allegheny Airlines, with Allegheny Airlines (later renamed USAir and US Airways) as the surviving company. The takeover was completed by June 1, 1972. US Airways was a major American airline that ceased to operate independently when the Federal Aviation Administration granted a single operating certificate for US Airways and American Airlines on April 8, 2015. The British Aircraft Corporation One-Eleven, also known as the BAC-111 or BAC 1-11, was a British short-range jet airliner widely used from the 1960s to the 1990s. It was the second short-haul jet airliner to enter service, following the French Sud Aviation Caravelle.
