Map Des Moines River Mississippi to Raccoon 1852 geological sections Owen Iowa

Description: Title: Series of Sections on the Des MoinesRiver in Iowa Between the Mississippi and the Raccoon Fork, by D.D. OwenDescription: Uncommon, mid-19thcentury lithographed map showing the course of the Des Moines River from FortDes Moines to its confluence with the Mississippi River along the top, and aseries of geological sections, hand colored in pastel tones, reflecting thesurvey's observations taken at various points along the river on the bottom.Attractive and detailed map of the Des Moines River, it locates many Iowatowns between Fort Des Moines in the west, and Keokuk in the east: Dudley,Lafayette, Bennington, Red Rock, Knoxville, Amsterdam, Eddyville, Ottumwa,Iowaville, Portland, Philadelphia, PIttsburg, Keosauqua, Bentonsport,Bonaparte, Farmington, St. Francisville Oskaloosa, Pella; as well as townsalong the Mississippi: Ft. Madison, Nauvou (IL), Warsaw (IL), and others.Condition: Fair. The map was printed on sturdy, high-qualitypaper, and is uniformly age-toned, with some light, scattered splotching. Themap has been misfolded numerous times, and while it has been flattened, thecreases are clearly visible, as are two darker areas that follow an originalfold and probably a past misfold. Along the leftmost fold, I also noted asmall, .25 inch void in an empty area of the map, and a small void at the topmargin affecting the border, as well as some light chipping along the top andbottom, but leaving an ample border to frame. Overall, a desirable map, withcharacter, priced accordingly.Condition: Acceptable. The map was printed on sturdy,high-quality paper, which has darkened with age. The map has several flaws, areasof foxing, scattered dark spots and light splotches, several misfolds, andthree small holes (two of which affect the image but really do not detract fromit) along what looks like an old misfold that is also darkened. A reallydesirable map with character. Publicationdate: 1852, in David DaleOwen's 1852 Report of a Geological Surveyof Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota; and incidentally of a Portion of NebraskaTerritory. Lippincott, Grambo & Co.Size: 12.25 x 50.5 inches
