FINE 1880s PLAINS INDIAN BUFFALO HIDE BEADED SHEATH & KNIFE/TIN CONES/PROVENANCE

Description: FINE 1880s PLAINS INDIAN BUFFALO HIDE BEADED SHEATH & KNIFE/TIN CONES/PROVENANCE FINE 1880s PLAINS INDIAN BUFFALO HIDE BEADED SHEATH & KNIFE/TIN CONES/PROVENANCE FINE ANTIQUE 1880s ORIGINAL LARGE NATIVE AMERICAN PLAINS INDIAN BUFFALO HIDE BEADED SHEATH & KNIFE WITH TIN CONE EMBELISHMENTS AND DROP / CIRCA 1880’s / WITH PROVENANCE YANKTON SIOUX TRIBE The Yankton Sioux Tribe, also known as the Ihanktonowan Dakota Oyate, is a federally recognized tribe of Yankton Western Dakota people located in South Dakota. Their name means "People of the End Village," which comes from the period when the tribe lived at the end of Spirit Lake just north of Mille Lacs Lake. The tribe is known for being the protectors of the sacred Pipestone Quarry for the Oceti Sakowin (Dakota). They maintain a free-ranging bison herd on their 37,000-acre reservation. The Yankton Indian Reservation was established in 1853 in Charles Mix County, South Dakota. This is an authentic American Plains Indian beaded sheath on Indian tanned buffalo hide, circa 1880’s. This large size knife sheath is 10” long x 3 1/8 wide, including the tin cone fringe; the beadwork is 2 1/4" across. The cone decorations were made from tin cans by the Native American Indians. The sheath front is fully beaded in 3 colors: white background with dark blue patterns and red accents. These beads were imported from Europe (mostly from Czechoslovakia and Austria) and are considered “trade beads” such as Native American Indians trading hides to frontiersmen for decorative trinkets. Note these early style handmade small seed beads have very small variations with slightly uneven dimensions and size. The sheath is made from Indian tanned buffalo hide that resembles parfleche and is made from two pieces hand sewn together at the bottom with wide, thick rawhide strands, and at the top edge and front throat edge using sinew thread with beading. As is often found, the top hanging loop is a simple piece of leather with a knot to tie it off. This thin piece appears to be a soft deer skin strand is broken and could very easily replaced, but left intact. There are 3 different beaded panels on the sheath front that were hand sewn onto a piece of buffalo hide in vertical and horizontal rolls of rawhide sinew sewn “lazy stitch” fashion, i.e., short strands of beads vs. individual beads strung. The rows of beads are tightly sewn to the buffalo hide front, but these sinew stitches that have multiple striations of the sinew thread can easily be seen on the front edge opposite the tin cones edge. This top square panel is decorated on a background of white beads with a dark blue beadwork border with a large diamond shape in dark blue beading and a white center cross in white beading. The long main center panel has a background of white beads with a dark blue stylized border patters that resemble mountains. The center of the main panel has three dark blue double strand beaded crosses with red beads in the center and all four ends. The side edge of the sheath is decorated in alternating strands of 2 blue beaded strands and 2 white beaded strands and appears like a candy stripe pattern. This alternating beading pattern continues along the top of the sheath throat. Remarkably, all of the beads on the front side remain in intact, original condition. The rare, decorative, beaded round 4 1/4” long (including the 2 tin cones, each with 2 horsehair decorations) x 5/16” diameter drop (tassel) at the bottom of the sheath is made from rawhide. The drop bead work is sewn in an alternating blue/white strand candy-striped pattern with 2 small tin cones (Indian made from tin cans) at the end. As expected, this Native American Indian sheath and knife were actually worn and used on the frontier. Remarkably, all the beads are original, intact, and are in as found, untouched condition. Note there are traces of original red paint on some of the rawhide connecting the tin cones about 1/3 of the along the edge from the top, and also on the back side. Of all the dozens of tin cone decorations along the top and side, only about a half dozen are missing near the bottom edge. I have one loose cone, and the remainder could be restored if desired. However, this very minor genuine wear loss is inconsequential to the overall presentation, and adds authenticity, character to the piece. This knife is a commercially made later period, used as a utilitarian, skinning and dressing game knife. However, this knife was made long after the sheath was handmade and was married to it; and was found in the sheath when this piece was originally discovered decades ago. Case had dozens of different stampings. Goins shows a Case XX mark as early as 1905. This knife has hardwood scales with 3 brass rivets, is 10” overall with a 5 1/2" blade that shows a lot of sharpening, use, and genuine aged patina. The knife could have been a period trade item from almost any number of possibilities. Note that these old, beaded sheaths have probably sheathed several different knives in its lifetime; and Native American Indians would put any old knife in any old sheath. Although the knife displays well, it could easily be replaced with just about any old looking knife (usually a skinning knife) and would look period and correct to the sheath if desired. Overall, in untouched, as found condition decades ago, and this knife has been with this sheath for many decades. All the beads are intact which makes this a premier piece in exceptional overall condition for its origin and extreme 130 - 145 age. Provenance: from an Iconic Bowie Knife / Western Americana / Native American California collection. Buyers must keep their PayPal account in good standing. Buyers must show good faith conduct with the seller. These options are designed to expedite resolution of any potential issue quickly, easily and amicably, in lieu of eBay / PayPal on-line dispute resolution process which is lengthy, laborious, and allows decisions to be made by a 3rd party instead of the principals; i.e., the buyer & seller.
