Ruskin began this endeavour when he was 24 years old, based upon material he collected in Switzerland in 1842.In this work Ruskin studies the art of modern painters. One argument he presents in 'Modern Painters' is that the recent picturesque painters were superior in landscapes than the old masters. The second volume was influential in the early days of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, with Ruskin's discussion on symbolism in art expressed through nature.Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front free endpaper of Volume I, 'May Mostyn, on her marriage with affectionate good wishes, from Archdeacon & Mrs Vesey - Easter 1898'. Francis Gerald Vesey was a priest in the Church of England, and the Archdeacon of Huntingdon from 1874 to 1915. CONDITION In a full vellum binding by Bickers. Externally, smart. Light discolouration and marks to the boards and spines, as is usual with a vellum binding. Only a few minor marks to the boards. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front free endpaper of Volume I. Internally, firmly bound.
